Lyme Disease Test Reports – a Difficult Disease to Diagnose

June 5th, 2009

In recent years Lyme disease has been receiving an increasing amount of  attention in the national media, due to the growing number of cases. However; one aspect of Lyme disease that is so alarming its inherent ability to avoid detection. The main problem with Lyme disease is that its symptoms often resemble those of so many other more common maladies, which can so easily lead to a misdiagnoses. The end result is that often times people can spend years enduring the Symptoms of Lyme disease before it is finally diagnosed and treated.

No Outward Symptoms in Half the Cases

Still another factor that contributes to the high rate of undetected cases of Lyme disease, is the fact that only a little more than half of the people who are infected with it actually develop any outward symptoms. The fact remains however, that Lyme disease is by far the most common vector born disease in the continental U.S.

Lyme Disease Test Reports

One of the most common Lyme disease tests that is given is referred to as the ELISA test, which stands for (enzyme linked immuno assay). While this test is inexpensive and easy to take it does have its glaring drawbacks, such as a high rate of false positives and 10% rate of missed detections.

Testing for Antibodies
There is another more reliable Lyme disease test however, which is referred to as the Western Blot test, so often times physicians will give both tests before compiling a Lyme disease test report for their patients. It must be noted however, that both of these common Lyme disease tests work by detecting the presence of antibodies to the disease, so if they are given too soon after infection they can give a Lyme disease report of a false positive.
